Our History

SUMA (Yonkers) Federal Credit Union was organized by Ukrainian immigrants who settled in Yonkers after WWII. Walter Czerewko, Walter Kozicky, Michael Shashkewych and Stefan Szulhan, Sr. were members of the organizing committee. Walter Kozicky, with the pro bono assistance of John O. Flis, Esq. laid the groundwork for the Credit Union charter, which was granted on August 26, 1964 under the name SUMA FCU. SUMA is the transliterated acronym for our sponsor organization – Ukrainian-American Youth Association.

SUMA (Yonkers) Federal Credit Union opened its first branch in September 1964, at 417 Nepperhan Ave., staffed by Sviatoslav Kocybala and Walter Kozicky. In September 1970 we relocated to the recently constructed Ukrainian Youth Center at 301 Palisade Ave. This construction was financially assisted by our institution and by members of the Ukrainian community. To better serve our expanding membership we opened branches in Spring Valley, NY in 1997 and in Stamford, CT in 1998. In October 2003, we opened our new, state-of-the-art headquarters at 125 Corporate Blvd. in Yonkers. We currently have four locations and over 30 employees to serve our members and our community.
